Avocado-Orange Treat (More Information)
A few details
The ingredients:
Although a strange combination, the avocado and orange mix well together as they are both tropical fruits. In addition, the avocado and orange both bring to this dish properties the other lacks.
The orange provides the sweetness to this dish. However, it will also provide this dish with the juiciness this recipe needs to help it freeze together (the more liquid the more ice produced when frozen). A juicier variety of orange, for example the Valencia orange, will work better in this dish as a result.
Also the juice from other varieties, such as the navel, can become bitter while the Valencia orange variety does not.
The avocado will prevent this dish from becoming frozen orange juice; the avocado meat will make this dish sufficiently creamy. Also, the orange juice will keep the avocado from turning brown because of the vitamin C contained in the orange. (Freezing will also aid in this process.)
When cooking:
Once mixed, this will not look that appetizing (a soupy, green mix) and freezing it won't help much (a solid chunk of green). Looks don't matter in this case; the taste - which is incredibly sweet - does. Once you have frozen it you will want to let it thaw. That extra juiciness from the orange will have frozen into a large orange icicle and allowing that to thaw for fifteen minutes (or a minute in the microwave) will break the ice block up enough for it to be a sweet, creamy and frozen treat.
Alternatives
Oranges are one of many fruits that work in this dish. Pretty much any fruit would work, though tropical fruits work best (since the avocado is a tropical fruit). Also, using fruits rich in Vitamin C are the best option as the Vitamin C will keep the avocado from turning brown (as mentioned above).
